Long Beach Noise Ordinance "flexability" ?????

"Airline Officials" seek City Council "flexibility"

on "spirit of noise rules"

Please note the following article in the August 29 Press Telegram and the references to the NOISE ORDINANCE and the City Council.

The Press Telegram front page article that quotes "airline officials" as having " a proposal to increase flights with out violating the "spirit of the noise rules"...this change would require "City Council members showing considerable flexibility" .

With the upcoming elections- it is essential that the neighborhoods stay vigilant about candidates’ positions on the LONG BEACH NOISE ORDINANCE!

ABC violation at Taco Beach documented

Another apparent major violation of ABC conditions documented at Los Altos Taco Beach

A major violation of one of the agreed to restrictions on the Alcohol Bureau Control alcohol license for the Los Altos Taco Beach restaurant was documented on Wednesday August 21, 2013.

A chalkboard sign decorated with balloons that for the last two weeks that simply read "OPEN" and "TACO TUESDAY" was converted into an advertisement for the availability of alcohol inside, a direct violation of the agreed to restrictions on the Taco Beach Conditional Alcohol License.

The sign stated "HOLA! Come in and try a Taco and Margarita".
The sign, set up outside on the sidewalk on the busy corner of Bellflower Blvd and Abbeyfield also features a picture of  taco and margarita.

An internet search on the meaning of "HOLA" produced this meaning:
Hola is a Spanish word that means hello. It is a popular informal form of greeting people that is commonly used by the youth

The ABC violation comes just as CSULB students are returning for the opening of classes next week.

Restriction Number 3 on the Conditional Alcohol License that was agreed to by Taco Beach owner Kevan Vance and was one of the conditions the over 45 neighborhood petition signers against the license based the withdrawal of their protests states in part:

"3. There shall be no exterior advertising or sign of any kind or type, including advertising directed from the exterior from within, promoting the availability of alcoholic beverages."

A neighborhood representative called Taco Beach to inform the manager that the sign was an ABC violation, but was told that he was not in. A call was then placed to Taco Beach owner Kevan Vance and a message was left on the voice mail.

An email documenting the violation was sent to ABC and City of Long Beach authorities.

LB Register available in Los Altos Center

After 2nd day as a two paper town- papers can't ignore each other...
Long Beach Register makes its debut this week

The new Long Beach Register is available in the Los Altos Center neighborhood. LB Register newspaper racks can be found in front of McDonald's on Bellflower Street , in front  of the Los Altos Post Office and at the news racks in front of Wendy's at Bellflower and Sterns.

Eventually the LB Register will be have the OC Register (with regional, state and national news) inside of our new local paper.

The LB Register is published Monday- Friday, and for a limited time it is available free of charge. The pay-for -view website for the paper is scheduled to debut in September.

The web address for the new paper is  LBRegister.com- not to be confused with the web address  LongBeachRegister.com -which will take you to the Press-Telegram web page!

While both papers have sworn off a "newspaper war" in today's papers both mentioned the other paper in what might be seen as a "shot across the bow".

In today's Tim Grobaty's Press-Telegram column, WHAT'S HOT
in his classic Grobatyism  he writes about the new paper hiring ex-Press-Telegram staffers;

Did the little exodus (exodette?) of  P-T'ers seeking asylum at a newspaper with an eye toward toppling the newspaper of record in Long Beach hurt us?

Personally? Yes, a little bit. We actually liked one of the people who left. Otherwise: Betrayed. Backstabbed. Sold out for pieces of silver.

He then adds about what competition has brought to the P-T and takes a shot at the former OC Register owners with this:
For several hours we felt mildly depressed by the turncoats, but then things started happening at the newspaper we’ve called home for 37 years. We started hiring some serious talent and otherwise beefing up the staff to replace and counter the murine — erstwhile staffers who thought they were scampering off a burning ship into the welcoming arms of a paper with libertarian/crackpot roots.
Meanwhile, the LB Register seems to have an ally in Mayor Foster with a front page story ( and picture) about one of the new Register owners Eric Spitz chatting "with Mayor Bob Foster after handing him a copy of the Long Beach Register at Polly's Gourmet Coffee" .
The Long Beach Register story goes on to say Mayor Foster is a fan of the new paper and states "Foster noted as the Press-Telegram has 'regionalized' its coverage, 'it lost focus' ".

It might not be war yet, but it certainly is not a love fest.

New "e cigarettes" store

E Cigarettes to come to Los Altos

A banner has announced the addition of an electronic cigarette (e cigarette) store in the empty store front between Ortho Mattress and Umberto Clothing on Bellflower Blvd. The “Vape Depot” will cater to the growing e-cigarette craze, just as the California Legislature appears to be near taking steps to classify the e-cigarettes in the same category as regular cigarettes.

If the legislature does, the same restrictions that apply in California that apply to cigarettes will also apply to e-cigarettes.

Los Altos NOISE

Fighter jets, business alarms and the homeless….
Los Altos’ weekend gets noisy

On Saturday night at approximately 9:15 pm F-18 fighter jets made four passes over Los Altos on the way to landing at the Long Beach Airport. The  Los Altos Park  sound monitor ( Stearns and Montair streets) registered the unusual night landing sound at 113 dB. The decibels peaked at 115 at the last sound monitor before the airport.

Long Beach Airport has no control over military flights. Military flights are not counted as part of the Long Beach Noise Ordinance “noise bucket”.

The Long Beach Airport provides a web-based sound monitoring system at this link:  http://webtrak.bksv.com/lgb .

On Sunday morning at approximately 6:35 am, Daggett Street and Abbeyfield residents were woken by the Taco Beach burglar alarm. Two Long Beach Police Department patrol cars responded to the alarm and found that the business was secure.

Daggett residents who ventured out to see what the blaring early alarm noise and loud screaming was all about witnessed two homeless people on the corner of  Daggett and Bellflower loudly yelling at each other as the alarm sounded.
