While it is named after CSULB, only one of the five “hub” activities is actually located at CSULB.

The “Pyramid Hub”  will be in the park area in front of the CSULB Walter Pyramid.   Along with the more “official”  popups at the event, music at the hub will be provided by DJ Dennis Owens and four popular local band favorites (click on blue hyperlinks for more information on bands):

12:30 PM   DJ Polyester & Masterdroog

While Los Altos Village and other neighborhoods directly impacted by street closures have been notified by flyers put on front doors and the information has appeared in 4th District Councilman Daryl Supernaw’s weekly newsletter, the 405 on ramps and the Los Altos and the Spring Street shopping areas are major draws from all of East Long Beach and West Orange County, so many are sure to be caught unaware. This will lead to a lot of traffic challenges.

Beach Streets East Long Beach street closure information

In addition to the 405 ramps at Bellflower having detours, here are the following traffic patterns that will be in place:

  •  Eastbound traffic on Atherton at Bellflower will be directed South on Bellflower Blvd.
  •  Northbound traffic on Bellflower Blvd. at Atherton will be directed West on Atherton.
  •  Southbound traffic on Bellflower will encounter "Street Closed Ahead" signs at Spring Street (eastbound Spring will be closed at Bellflower).  Traffic continuing South down Bellflower and not taking the 405 on-ramps will be directed East on Willow or South East at the Los Coyotes Diagonal (LCD) at  Bellflower.

Long Beach At Home store's Grand Opening Saturday, June 18, 2022

At Home store's Grand Opening

New At Home store in the Los Altos Gateway Center occupies former KMart speace.

The Grand Opening for the new Long Beach  At Home store was on Saturday, June 18, 2022.  The   Texas-based home decor company renovated the former KMart next to the Lowe's in the  Los Altos Gateway Shopping Center.  The new store opened with a soft opening on June 1, 2022.

At Home is a superstore for both indoor and outdoor home decor.   The store features a selection of both name brands and At Home private label brands.    Inside the store, isles include both warehouse-like isles for big-bulk items like furniture and regular shopping isles for items like kitchen accessories.   As an example of the huge selection, the mirror "department" includes 6 isles of various types of mirrors.

The Long Beach store joins other seven California stores. The four Southern California At Home stores are in Lake Forest, Riverside, Temecula, and San Diego.  In May 2021 At Home was sold to the powerhouse investment firm of Hellman & Friedman in an all-cash deal of $2.8 billion.

Operating over 200 stores in 40 states, At Home has a target of growth of 600 stores nationwide. The stores are known for their huge inventory of over 50,000 home and garden-related items at reasonable pricing.  The inventory features 75% of unbranded merchandise developed specifically for At Home.

The E Long Beach Kmart site was a focal point in the original Land Use Element fight.  Long Beach Development Services argued that with the inevitable demise of Kmart and big-box retail, the site should be slated for mixed-use residential and business.  After strong local opposition led by eastside neighborhood association members of the Council of Neighborhood Organizations (CONO), the site remained zoned for retail only.

Hiccups opens a new Barista

Hiccups opens a new Barista

By David Alpern

May 31, 2022

In 2012 Sky Hoang launched his entrepreneurial journey when he decided to import the popular Orange Country-style Asian dining to this community by opening Hiccups Restaurant and Teahouse.

Located in the Ralphs Center on the Outer Traffic Circle in Long Beach’s Fourth District, the unique concept was a big hit with the nearby CSULB students and residents. The Hiccups chain now has franchise locations across California, Arizona, Texas, and Florida.

With a decade of accumulated experience and passion for food and drinks, Hoang decided to return to his Fourth District business roots and launch -Hiccups Barista a new concept hub for Asian coffee, tea, and boba drinks at 4172 E Willow Street at Lakewood Blvd.

Sky Hoang at Hiccups Barrista
Hoang is driven by a passion for coffee, customer service, and creating new products and market testing them to actual customers. He understands that to most coffee consumers it is more than just a beverage, it is a daily emotional support, a jump start for the day, and an afternoon pick-me-up. This insight ignited the concept for the new  Hiccups Barista. Every coffee recipe is created via trials and errors in order to develop recipes designed for coffee enthusiasts who crave to indulge.

The new Hiccups Barista’s interesting pricing strategy helps customers indulge. Customers pay just a 40-cent incremental up-charge to get a significantly larger size drink.  This small price differential for a drink that is nearly 50% larger is a subtle yet strategic way to nudge customers into getting a larger apportioning of happiness in a cup.

With Hiccups Barista Hoang has returned to a start-up and away from the model where franchise management meant that each store is not fully in sync with his vision. The recent pandemic afforded him the time to workshop his coffee formula to excellence and rationalize a switch in focus to coffee, which is an easier operation to manage and eventually scale.

Hoang has been rejuvenating by recreating the thrill of starting an endeavor from scratch but with more expertise this time. Yet, even with another successful restaurant launch accomplished, new challenges are presenting themselves.

The new location is tucked into a corner, away from easy street visibility and with hard-to-spot signage. Moreover, competitive pressure kicked up within weeks of debuting, as Starbucks opened a high-profile location directly across the street on the land that used to house a Spires restaurant.

In addition, there are employment challenges. Hoang is particular about the learning curve, training time, and coffee experience in any new hires so as to not compromise the experience he is looking to create. He is not seeking to hire new staff and simply schedule them immediately.

The current labor shortage sees Hoang spending even more hours than planned in the store. Hoang jokes about his transition a decade ago from the finance industry into the restaurant industry so he could enjoy working seven days a week, rather than just a mere five days a week. All that time working has actually helped him form connections more quickly with the community.

Most recently Hoang has observed how consumer spending behavior is being impacted by the rapid rise in gas prices.  As fuel costs have been rising he has noted a concurrent drop in customers' average per check spending.

After years of experimenting with taste notes in brewed coffee, Hoang enjoys offering patrons a house coffee formulation he is eager for them to sample. He is inviting local nonprofits to coordinate community fundraisers with 20% of receipts given back to the organization.

It’s rare for an entrepreneur to step away from something they have successfully cultivated into a growth vehicle and return back to their start-up roots. The new Hiccups Barista affords Sky and his wife, Khiem, the ability to return to their passion for developing diverse and authentic Asian beverage and culinary experiences.

Los Altos Village to get LB's first fiVe BEL°W store

Long Beach’s first fiVe BEL°W store coming to Los Altos Village

Long Beach’s first Five Below store is coming to Los Altos Village.  The new store will occupy the former Rite Aide space in the Los Altos North Shopping Center.

Five Below specializes in items under five dollars that are aimed at young teens.  Items include candy and beverages, school supplies, electronic accessories as well as sports and game-related items.  Items above the five-dollar price point are called Five Beyond but are still offered at very affordable price points.

First opening in 2002 in Philadelphia, the store has expanded to nearly 2,000 locations across 40 states.   The two closest stores to Long Beach are in Compton and Downey.  This year the fast-growing retailer announced a goal of 400 new stores with the goal of 3,500 retail stores by 2030.

The current Long Beach location is being remodeled but is accepting job applications online   The Los Altos Village store is expected to open this Summer.

Supernaw is hosting a Los Altos reception for mayoral campaign

Councilman Supernaw is hosting a  Los Altos  reception to introduce residents to Suzie Price's mayoral campaign

Fourth District Councilman Daryl Supernaw will host a campaign meet-and-greet style reception for Councilwoman Suzie Price’s campaign for Long Beach Mayor from 6pm-7:30 pm on Tuesday, April 26th  at Ecco’s Pizza in Los Altos.

The event gives East Long Beach residents the chance to see what all the local buzz around Price as the next mayor is all about.

Supernaw is the Long Beach City Council’s only non-partisan member and he rarely makes any type of political endorsement. Even rarer for Supernaw is actually holding a reception for a candidate, which appears to be evidence of his depth of support for Price becoming Long Beach’s next mayor.

When you get to know Suzie Price and what she stands for, it is easy to see why Supernaw is so strongly supporting her.

Price’s broad-based support across the city is tied to her common-sense approach to some of Long Beach’s most pressing problems: the homeless; crime and public safety; infrastructure needs like street repair and support for common-sense solutions to increase housing.

Price’s campaign slogan “Service over Politics”  clearly relates to Long Beach’s current local government climate.  Price articulates that a Mayor Price will focus on making Long Beach’s local government “competent and functional”.   That vision is in stark contrast to her main opponent Councilman Rex Richardson who is focused on partisanship, ideology, and promises based on current political rhetoric and verbiage.

The difference between Price being able to lead and Richardson not being ready for the mayor’s office is crystal clear in the San Pedro Democratic Club debate between the two in the short video below.  Watching the debate clearly shows that Price is ready to lead Long Beach as Mayor Price.
