Sen. Scott Weiner's housing and density bill known as SB 50 that was sidelined last year by opponents in a rules maneuver failed to gain the 21 votes today in the California Senate.  The vote failed by three votes in a 18-15 vote. A half-dozen senators did not vote including Sen. Umberg.

When the bill failed, Senate supporters requested a reconsideration vote. That vote will take place Thursday or Friday as Weiner and his supporters try to find the remaining votes to pass the bill.

The bill which would allow building high density housing in single family zoned areas and historic districts.

The bill must pass by Friday January 31st.  

The controversial bill has split the Democrats in Sacramento, including its leadership. The Senate leader, Senate Pro Tempore Sen. Toni Akins is for the bill. Senate Majority Leader Robert Hertzberg is against the bill.

CSULB suspends selling parking passes

On the second day of school, CSU Long Beach  has suspended selling parking passes. 

A Tuesday August 27th message from the University's Parking and Transportation Department: 

Student Parking Permits (fall 2019) - Temporarily On Hold

Due to heavy traffic and parking patterns in the initial days of new academic year, Parking and Transportation Services will temporarily suspend the sales of Student Parking Permits.

We are confident that patterns will normalize in the coming days at which time Student Permit sales will resume.

In the meantime, please consider one of the many alternative forms of sustainable transportation sponsored by the university to get to campus including Long Beach Transit TAP, Los Coyotes Shuttle, Bike Share and Carpool.

In a story on CSULB's enrollment in the Grunion Gazette, CSULB President Dr. Conoley the University is quoted as saying:

 "Although our official census is weeks away, as of today our total enrollment is outpacing Fall 2018.”

This year CSULB announced a number of parking changes.  The changes included an Assisted Stacked parking program.  The satellite lot program that last year included a discounted parking arrangement in the Lowes/Kmart parking lot was discontinued.

Under Dr. Conoley the University has met with residents of the surrounding neighborhoods and worked toward finding solutions to the parking programs and other numerous neighborhood concerns.

Panera Bread Bakery-Cafe coming to Los Altos Village

The first Long Beach Panera Bread Bakery-Cafe is coming to Los Altos Village.  The new location, complete with a brand new patio will be taking over the former Payless Shoe Store space at 2280 N. Bellflower Blvd in the North Los Altos Center.

The plans for a Panera were discovered by local social media sleuths. Neighborhood curiosity was piqued when construction started immediately after the Payless Shoe store closed last week.  When a resident went to the Long Beach Development Services website to check on building permits, the permit for Panera was found and it was posted on social media.

The new Los Altos Village Panera Bakery and Cafe will have a patio in the front of the store on Bellflower Blvd.

Sources in Long Beach Development Services confirmed that Panera is currently looking for other areas in Long Beach for stores. The closest Panera restaurants to Long Beach are in Lakewood, Seal Beach and Cerritos. 

Panera long known for its lunch menu has been upgrading choices for breakfast and test marketing new dinner items. In April of this year the chain  expanded its breakfast menu to include a variety of items like a breakfast sandwich and upgraded its coffee offerings to reach a different breakfast customer.  Two years ago Panera was bought by JAB Holdings, a coffee industry giant that also owns Peet's Coffee.

Since its successful breakfast upgrade, new dinner entrees and new vegetable sides are being launched in test markets for heartier late night meals. Currently available after 4:30 pm in Florida and Kentucky markets,  the new dinner items include meatier sandwiches, bowls and flatbread pizzas.  Panera offers delivery through its own drivers.

Two Los Altos Village neighborhood parades

Los Altos Village 4th of July neighborhood parades

Communities across America celebrate the 4th of July with local parades of neighbors and their children.  But not many can boast of TWO community bike parades.

Two neighborhood bike/scooter 4th of July parades will march around the Los Altos Village neighborhoods on Thursday morning to start off the 4th of July.

Starting at 9:00 am, the East Side of Los Altos Village will be strolling and biking (many with their pets) around North Whaley Park.

Neighbors will meet at the corner of San Anseline and Los Santos before the 9 am start time.

Across Bellflower Blvd. on the West Side of Los Altos Village a bike neighbors will meet at the corner of Montair and Garford at 10 am to decorate for the "10:30-ish" start of the years running neighborhood bike parade.

Whether you parade or don't parade - have a great Independence Day!

Two men were stabbed shortly after 1 am in the downtown Long Beach Taco Beach.  Later a third stabbing victim showed up at a local hospital.

Police believe that the Taco Beach stabbing and the third stabbing are related. The Long Beach Gang detectives are investigating the incident.

The Downtown Taco Beach "Cantina" draws a younger nightclub crowd on the weekends.

In February 2013, Serena Medina, a 24 year-old mother was killed when she was run-down on Pine Street after leaving a fight in the downtown Taco Beach.

According to the Press-Telegram report:

"Witnesses observed a group involved in an altercation, Arrona said. Family members of the victim said it started at Taco Beach, 211 Pine Ave. It is unclear who was fighting, but a crowd ultimately spilled out onto the street, they said.

Peralta said two men got into a car and reversed the vehicle, hitting Medina"

Taco Beach has three locations, Downtown, the Airport and Los Altos Village.  When opening the Los Altos Village location the owner originally applied to stay open until 2 am.  The Los Altos Village residents protested the liquor license at the local and state level.  Restrictions on the license resulted in the Taco Beach Los Altos Village location becoming a family friendly local favorite.  

Two years ago the owners applies to extend alcohol serving hours past the restrictions at the Los Altos Village location. Residents objected to the extension and pointed to the original agreement to withdrawal their protests to the alcohol license which was partly due to the current restrictions on the hours.  Facing an ABC denial of the request, the owners withdrew the increase to increase alcohol  hours request.
